Dock is launching its own mainnet on September 30, 2020. The mainnet is the culmination of years of collaboration, hard work, and testing that brings to the market a bespoke credential issuing and verification platform. Dock provides a range of tools incorporating blockchain technology that enables businesses and developers to create verifiable credentials. 

The mainnet enables issuers to create their own decentralized identities (DIDs) and use them to issue verifiable credentials while also enabling recipients to control, present, and display their credentials whenever they wish. The mainnet is completely open-source and built based on industry-leading W3C standards, providing a network that is interoperable with any other platform using the same standards.

The Dock Network has been built to enable organizations to overcome many of the issues that surround digital credentials, specifically the ease with which they can be counterfeited and the time and cost involved in validating the authenticity of the credentials. Furthermore, centralized credential issuing can also be problematic as it keeps data within silos and ensures that the issuer remains in control of the credential. This runs counter to Dock’s belief that the credential recipient should control their own data and something that the company solves with this release. 

The mainnet represents the completion of a significant milestone in the company’s roadmap. Throughout 2020, the development team has been aggressively working through a number of releases that started with the Northill testnet release, followed by schema support, enhanced interoperability (through greater adherence to W3C standards) and the commencement of the validator testnet called Danforth. Indeed, working with a large group of validators and building these strategic relationships early is something that will ensure the network is robust (as a result of being decentralized) and not controlled by a single entity.

In tandem with the network development work, the Dock team has also been working with a partner to create a demo app that utilizes the Dock SDK. The purpose of this is to not only serve as a reference for future development work, it will also be used in the company’s ongoing business development efforts as they seek to rapidly grow network adoption. The app will of course be open source and will be released around mainnet launch.
